Replay Cafe and Gerbeaud Kavehas – Day 3 in Budapest

After another visit to CoffeeHeaven where the service and previous days drink orders were replicated perfectly we set off for St Stephens Basilica, passing by Cafe Negro, which looked classy and elegant. Running short of time to make our queue for tickets at the Hungarian Parliament we bypassed this (hoping to return later on) and ended up standing in line for 2 hours before finding out we could only get tickets for a later tour. Somewhat dejected we headed into Deak Ter via Opera for lunch, stopping en-route to buy tickets for Anyegin, the Opera being performed that evening. Lunch was taken at Replay Cafe in Deak Ter, a hearty Veal Schnitzel with warm potato salad. After the sumptuous meal we had coffee (we could not fit in any cake at that stage). The coffee here was adequate, not something to write home about but certainly above par compared to similar establishments in Europe.

After heading back for our Parliament Tour we made our way to Vorosmarty Ter once more to visit Gerbeaud for the second time. As the sun was beating down an Ice Coffee creation was ordered, filled with ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles and presented with a waffle stick this was certainly a sight to behold and the taste was phenomenal. Whilst the coffee purists won’t appreciate this type of drink it appeals to the masses and in 30c heat was just what the doctor ordered. I’m glas the sugar and caffiene kicked in as we had a 3 1/2 hour opera to sit through, sung in Latin with Hungarian subtitiles – certainly an experience not to be missed.

Tomorrow we plan to visit 2 more cafe’s before heading back to the UK.
