Cafe reviews – Coffee Heaven (Pest) and Koruna Kavehaz – Buda (Budapest)
First stop was CoffeeHeaven at Ferenciek Tere on the Pest side of the Danube. First impressions of this European chain were – wow, this is a well thought out package. Having read the company website this is a new store which explains why it was so clean, fresh and modern. The menu board was unique and well displayed, the coffee produced was excellent and the milk frothed to near perfection on my wife’s Cappuccino. Full Fat (3.5%) milk was used. Prior to our visit we had not heard of this company but now I will be looking out for them in other parts of Central and Eastern Europe. Staff training features high on the agenda and there was a barista workshop taking place on the morning of our visit, with the baristas evaluating and grading each others abilities and quality of drinks produced. The was encouraging as I have not been witness to this in many stores in the past (unless I was either running or attending the training). I made aq mental note to visit the next day to see if the experience could be replicated by another shift team.
After a morning exploring the Children’s Railway we headed to Buda, visiting the Hungarian National Gallery and pausing for a coffee at Koruna Kavehaz, run by the same people as Ruszwurm that gets a write-up in all the guidebooks (sadly we did not have time to visit both). The views of the Castle/Gallery were well worth the price of the drinks and the Castle Caramel Cake that I had to accompany my macchiato was superb. I could place the origins of the beans but there was a fruity taste in the cup with a satisfying finish, not strong or bitter in any way. I could have had another if we hadn’t been running to a schedule – our Danube Night Cruise left in 2 hours and we were on the opposite side of the river from where we needed to be, and a change of clothes to more formal attire was in order.
Tomorrow we will be exploring Deak Ter and Vaci Utca again.
