Steam wands do not reach the required heat to kill most bacteria.
Dried milk residue, when left on a steam wand encourages growth of harmful bacteria, and often a pungent odour.
Use a cleaning cloth identified to only clean the steam wand, to help reduce cross contamination from other surfaces. Some cafes choose to colour code their cleaning cloths and bar towels.
Ensure all staff attain a basic food hygiene qualification.

Consumer awareness of standards is growing rapidly in the coffee sector.
Many new customers (who may already be home baristas) will be drawn to your machine, and a dirty steam wand may result in potential clients voting with their feet, choosing to drink somewhere with a coffee machine that has a clean steam wand.
Coffee Companies who support this campaign are well placed to advise on the potential profit increases for cafes who maintain their equipment.

Steam Wand Cleaning Advice |
|
 |
|
|
During the Day
Keep a damp cloth nearby to immediately wipe down the outside of the steam wand after each use.
Purge the steam wand after each use (open the steam valve for a short burst of steam to escape)
Do not leave the steam wand submerged in water, as a vacuum will occur as the steam wand cools, sucking milk particles further up the steam wand towards your boiler
At the End of the Day
Remove the steam wand tips daily and soak them in your cleaning product. You'll be amazed at how much residue builds up over a short period of time.
Use a proprietary milk or dairy cleaning solution. We can advise on what should be safe and suitable for your machine.
